Frequently Asked Questions

Of course! It’s easier if we break it down:

Reforest – Our goal is to increase the scale and quality of tree planting and forest restoration projects across Canada. Technically, “reforestation” usually refers to replanting trees after harvest, but the RCC’s focus is the literal interpretation of the word to include afforestation and forest restoration. For resources that focus on post-harvest reforestation, visit replant.ca

Canada – The RCC has a national scope and aims to consider, include, and empower the entire tree planting and forest restoration community across all Indigenous communities, provinces, and territories.

Collective – The tree planting and forest restoration community in Canada functions much like an ecosystem, with different people and groups performing different roles and occupying different niches while also working with and relying on each other for the success of the whole; it’s more than a sum of its parts. We believe “Collective” most accurately reflects the RCC’s focus on building capacity across the entire community.

The Reforest Canada Collective does not support the conversion of historically non-forest ecosystems, such as native grasslands or peatlands, to planting sites. In addition to the many non-carbon benefits and services these ecosystems provide, destroying vulnerable ecosystems to plant trees can release more carbon than is stored.

The Reforest Canada Collective is funded by the Government of Canada’s 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program. The RCC management team works closely with the 2BT team to identify capacity and resource gaps highlighted by 2BT recipients. However, the RCC is independent from the Government of Canada in its initiatives.

The RCC is managed by Forests Canada staff with the generous voluntary support and input from its the contributing organizations of its initial working group: ALUS, AWES, Cariboo Carbon Solutions, Community Forests International, New Brunswick Federation of Woodlot Owners, Shakti by Telus, and Tree Canada.

No, the RCC does not directly provide funding. We do curate and create resources and host events to help organizations understand their funding options and identify the best opportunities for their objectives.

The RCC is not involved in the official review or award process of 2BT funding agreements. Applications for 2 Billion Trees funding must be submitted directly through the Government of Canada’s official 2BT application portal.

The Reforest Canada Collective is open to discussing partnerships to support its goal of increasing the scale and quality of tree planting and forest restoration projects nationwide.
